How to Import Edible Oil in Bulk: Complete Import Guide

Learn how to import edible oil in bulk from Thailand. Procedures, documentation, quality standards, and shipping logistics.

Types of Edible Oil Available from Thailand

Thailand exports several types of edible oils: RBD Palm Oil (Refined, Bleached, Deodorized palm olein), Soybean Oil (refined and crude), and Sunflower Oil. Each has different specifications, pricing, and applications.

Packaging Options for Bulk Import

1. Flexitanks

Flexitanks are large bladders installed inside 20FT containers, holding 18-22 MT of liquid oil. This is the most cost-effective method for bulk edible oil import. Flexitanks are single-use and food-grade certified.

2. ISO Tanks

ISO tank containers are reusable stainless steel tanks holding 20-26 MT. They offer better temperature control and are suitable for long-distance shipping. Higher initial cost but lower per-unit cost for regular shipments.

3. Drums and Tins

For smaller bulk orders, edible oil can be packed in 190kg steel drums or 20L/25L tins. This is more expensive per MT but suitable for distributors who repack for retail.

Quality Standards and Certifications

Ensure the supplier provides: Certificate of Analysis (COA), SGS Inspection Report, Halal Certificate (if required), Kosher Certificate (if required), and Health Certificate from Thai FDA. Oil specifications should include FFA (Free Fatty Acids), moisture content, color (Lovibond scale), and peroxide value.

Import Documentation

Required documents: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, Phytosanitary Certificate, Certificate of Analysis, and Insurance Certificate. Some countries require additional permits for edible oil import.

Shipping and Storage Considerations

Edible oil should be shipped in clean, food-grade containers with proper temperature control. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Upon arrival, store in clean, dry warehouses away from contaminants. Shelf life is typically 12-18 months from production date.
